My career as a machinist has fostered my love for metal as an art medium. I’ve been working with metal for over 10 years, primarily steel and salvaged materials. I initially began creating reactionary art such as spiked light fixtures and large abstract flame sculptures powered by propane. I wanted to grab the attention of viewers with sharp edges, fire, and fear. To balance the perception of danger, I started designing pieces that appeared soft and beautiful. As a native Oregonian, my outdoor adventures in the wilderness inspired me to sculpt flowers and trees replicating native species, highlighting the irony of a cold, steel, human created nature. Most of my work is hand cut and formed using anvils, hammers, plasma, and brute strength. From time to time I reach back to my machinist roots and use CNC lasers and mills. I am currently working on fire pits, garden sculptures and flowers, urban jewelry, bells, and robots. |
